Short answer

Franchise owner demographics, from Census Bureau Annual Business Survey data for 2023: female-owned firms made up 19.1% of franchised employer firms, minority-owned firms 27.3% and veteran-owned firms 4.9%. Asian-owned firms franchised most often (7.9% vs 4.7% of all firms); female-owned (3.7%) and Hispanic-owned (4.0%) firms franchised less often.

This fact sheet reports published data. It is not financial advice; requirements are as each brand published them on the date shown.

These cards come from the Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey (ABS) for data year 2023 (collected in the 2024 ABS), the newest federal data that ask every sampled employer firm whether it operated as a franchise, and from the 2007 Survey of Business Owners microdata, the newest public file that links that answer to owner age, education and experience.

Which owner groups franchise most often (2023)

Franchising is a more common route for some owner groups than others, and most of the gaps are larger than their margins of error. In 2023, 7.9% of Asian-owned employer firms operated all or partly as a franchise, a propensity ratio of 1.68 against the 4.7% rate for all responding employer firms (90% interval 1.56 to 1.80), according to Census ABS table AB2300CSCB01. The White-owned rate was 4.2%, so the Asian minus White gap is 3.7 percentage points with a standard error of 0.32.

Firms owned equally by men and women franchised at 6.8% in 2023, against 4.5% for male-owned and 3.7% for female-owned firms. Minority-owned firms franchised at 6.2% against 4.2% for nonminority-owned firms. Black or African American-owned firms franchised at 5.1%, which is 0.9 points above the White-owned rate and clears the 90% test; their ratio to the all-firm rate (1.09, interval 0.97 to 1.20) cannot be told apart from 1.

Hispanic-owned firms franchised at 4.0% against 4.7% for non-Hispanic-owned firms in 2023, a gap of -0.7 points. Veteran-owned and nonveteran-owned firms both franchised at 4.6%. The American Indian and Alaska Native rate (3.8%, standard error 0.6) and the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander rate (4.1%, standard error 0.9) are too imprecise to separate from the White-owned rate.

Who owns franchise firms: each group's share of franchise employer firms

The second way to read franchise owner demographics is composition: what share of all franchise firms each group owns. Of the 132,362 franchise employer firms Census could classify by owner in 2023, 61.2% were male-owned, 19.1% female-owned and 19.7% owned equally by men and women (ABS data year 2023, our calculation). Among all responding employer firms the female-owned share was 23.8%, so female-owned firms are under-represented among franchise firms by 4.7 points.

Minority-owned firms held 27.3% of franchise employer firms in 2023 against 20.6% of all responding employer firms. Most of that gap comes from Asian-owned firms: 18.1% of franchise firms against 10.6% of all firms. Black or African American-owned firms held 2.7% of franchise firms and Hispanic-owned firms 6.1%. Veteran-owned firms held 4.9% of franchise firms, close to their 4.8% share of all firms.

For where these firms are located, see our franchise statistics by state; this page does not repeat state or metro shares.

Veterans and food service: where the franchise gaps sit by industry

Accommodation and food services is the most franchised sector for almost every owner group. In 2023, 19.3% of all responding employer firms in that sector operated as a franchise (ABS data year 2023). Among the owner groups with a reliable estimate, it is the top sector for all except Asian-owned firms, whose highest reliable share is in educational services (26.1%, standard error 3.6), and American Indian and Alaska Native-owned firms, whose only reliable cell is construction.

Veteran-owned firms are where the sector view changes the picture. Across all industries, veteran-owned firms franchised at the same 4.6% rate as nonveteran-owned firms in 2023. Inside accommodation and food services, 24.5% of veteran-owned firms were franchised against 18.9% of nonveteran-owned firms. The 5.6-point gap has a standard error of 3.16 (z = 1.77), which clears the 90% test but not a 95% test, and the veteran cell rests on an estimated 1,484 franchise firms with a count RSE of 16.0%. Treat it as a lead, not a settled difference.

Within the same sector, female-owned firms franchised at 11.9% against 22.2% for male-owned firms, and Asian-owned firms at 23.4% against 17.4% for White-owned firms. Both gaps clear the 90% test. Management of companies and enterprises (NAICS 55) is left out of the sector ranking because its estimates swing widely: the all-firm share is 15.6% with a standard error of 9.0 points.

How franchise shares changed from 2019 to 2023

The franchise share for all responding employer firms moved from 4.9% in 2019 to 4.7% in 2023, a change of -0.2 points that does not clear the 90% test (ABS data year 2019, ABS data year 2023). Five group changes do clear it. The Asian-owned share fell from 9.9% to 7.9% and the minority-owned share from 7.4% to 6.2%. The female-owned share fell from 4.2% to 3.7%. The veteran-owned share rose from 3.9% to 4.6%, while the nonveteran-owned share fell from 4.9% to 4.6%.

The 2012 Survey of Business Owners put the Asian-owned franchise share at 9.4% and the Black or African American-owned share at 7.4% (SBO 2012 table SB1200CSCB67). The SBO is a different survey with a different frame, so the step down to the ABS years is shown for context and not tested as a trend.

Age, education and experience of franchise owners (2007 microdata)

No current federal table links franchise status to owner age, education or experience. The ABS asks about owner traits and about franchising, but its published owner tables have no franchise split. The newest public file that allows the link is the 2007 Survey of Business Owners microdata; every figure in this section is a 2007 estimate from 1,437,687 owner records.

In 2007, 50.0% of owners of franchise employer businesses had bought the business, against 23.6% of other owners, and 42.6% had founded it, against 66.0%. 46.7% of franchise owners had been self-employed or owned a business before, against 38.5%. Franchise owners were less likely to call the business their main source of income (54.2% against 69.3%) and less likely to work 40 or more hours a week in it (52.6% against 63.2%). 19.3% were born outside the United States, against 13.7%.

Franchise owners skewed slightly younger: 32.8% were under 45 in 2007, against 29.5% of other owners, and the median franchise owner fell in the 45 to 54 band. Bachelor’s degrees were only slightly more common (50.2% against 48.9%). For scale, 51.3% of all employer-firm owners were 55 or older in 2023 (ABS owner table AB2300CSCBO); that table has no franchise split, so it shows the wider owner population, not franchise owners.

How survey-based franchise owner figures compare

The International Franchise Association’s 2026 Value of Franchising report, conducted by Oxford Economics, surveyed 2,929 franchisees in June and July 2025 (IFA and Oxford Economics report). It reports that 64% said the franchise was the first business they owned and 30% said they would not own a business without franchising. These are the IFA’s own figures from an advocacy-commissioned online survey, weighted to Census firm counts by industry; they are not Census estimates.

The same report reads ABS data year 2023 as showing about 26% of franchises and about 19% of non-franchised businesses owned by people of color. Our recomputation from the Census file matches when publicly held and unclassifiable firms stay in the base: 26.7% of all franchise firms and 19.9% of non-franchise firms were minority-owned. With classifiable firms as the base, the franchise figure is 27.3%.

For first-business rates, the ABS owner table gives a benchmark for all owners, not franchise owners: 48.7% of owners of responding employer firms said the business was their first in 2023 (ABS AB2300CSCBO). Widely shared statistics pages give franchise owner gender and veteran shares without a primary source; the Census figures above are the citable ones.

Original analysis: how we calculated it

1. Franchise propensity ratio by owner group, 2023

Formula
group franchise share / all-firm franchise share; 90% CI = ratio +/- 1.645 x ratio x sqrt((SEg/g)^2 + (SEall/all)^2)
Inputs
A23-{group}, A23-all; D-ratio-{group}
Result
Asian 1.68 (1.56 to 1.80); equally male and female 1.45; minority 1.32; Black 1.09 (0.97 to 1.20); veteran 0.98; White 0.89; Hispanic 0.85; female 0.79 (0.74 to 0.83).
Limitations
Covariance between a group and the total is ignored, so intervals are conservative; responding firms only.

2. Change 2019 to 2023 by owner group

Formula
share(2023) - share(2019); significant if |change| > 1.645 x sqrt(SE2019^2 + SE2023^2)
Inputs
A19-{group}, A23-{group}; D-chg-{group}
Result
Significant: Asian -2.0 points, minority -1.2, female -0.5, veteran +0.7, nonveteran -0.3. Not significant: all firms -0.2, Black -0.4, Hispanic 0.0.
Limitations
Treats annual samples as independent; 2019 used NAICS 2017 and a larger sample.

3. Owner group by industry

Formula
highest franchise share among reliable 2-digit sector cells (published, share and count RSE under 30%; NAICS 55 and 99 excluded)
Inputs
I23-{group}-{naics}; D-vet72, D-72-asian, D-72-female
Result
Accommodation and food services tops the list for every group with reliable cells except Asian-owned (educational services, 26.1%) and American Indian and Alaska Native-owned firms. Veteran minus nonveteran in that sector: +5.6 points (z = 1.77).
Limitations
Sixteen sectors per group were scanned, so one borderline result can occur by chance.

4. Representation gap

Formula
group share of franchise employer firms - group share of all responding employer firms (classifiable firms = 100)
Inputs
N23-{group}, N23-classifiable; D-gap-{group}
Result
Asian +7.5 points, minority +6.7, equally male and female +6.3, female -4.7, Hispanic -0.9, veteran +0.1, White -8.2.
Limitations
Built from weighted counts of responding firms; race groups overlap.

5. Owner traits, franchise vs non-franchise owners (2007 data)

Formula
weighted share of owners with the trait among owners answering the item; random-group SE; 90% difference test
Inputs
P07-{trait}-F, P07-{trait}-N; D-P07-{trait}
Result
Bought the business 50.0% vs 23.6%; previously self-employed 46.7% vs 38.5%; main income source 54.2% vs 69.3%; under 45 32.8% vs 29.5%; bachelor's or higher 50.2% vs 48.9%.
Limitations
2007 data; PUMS drops publicly held firms and repeats owners of multi-state firms; labelled as 2007 everywhere.

Questions people ask

What percentage of franchise owners are women?

19.1% of US franchise employer firms were female-owned in 2023, and another 19.7% were owned equally by men and women, according to Census ABS data (AB2300CSCB01, our calculation). Counting individual owners rather than firms, 32.7% of owners of franchise businesses were women in the 2007 Census microdata.

What percentage of franchise owners are minorities?

27.3% of US franchise employer firms that Census could classify by owner were minority-owned in 2023, against 20.6% of all responding employer firms. Asian-owned firms were 18.1% of franchise firms, Hispanic-owned 6.1% and Black or African American-owned 2.7% (Census ABS, data year 2023).

Are veterans more likely to own franchises?

Not across all industries. In 2023, 4.6% of veteran-owned and 4.6% of nonveteran-owned US employer firms operated as a franchise (Census ABS, data year 2023). In accommodation and food services the veteran rate was 24.5% against 18.9%, a gap that is significant at 90% but not at 95%. The veteran-owned rate did rise from 3.9% in 2019.

How old is the average franchise owner?

No federal source publishes a mean age for franchise owners. In the 2007 Census microdata, the largest group of franchise owners (32.9%) was aged 45 to 54, which also holds the median, and 32.8% were under 45 (SBO 2007 PUMS, our estimate). For all US employer-firm owners in 2023, 51.3% were 55 or older (ABS AB2300CSCBO).

Is franchising a good path for first-time business owners?

The data cannot say whether it is a good path for any one person. In the IFA’s 2025 franchisee survey, 64% said the franchise was their first business (IFA and Oxford Economics); for all US employer-firm owners in 2023 the Census figure was 48.7%. In 2007, 46.7% of franchise owners had been self-employed before. See franchise failure rate data and our guide to buying a franchise before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

How many franchise businesses are there in the US by owner type?

Census counted 135,505 responding employer firms that operated all or partly as a franchise in 2023. Of these, 25,278 were female-owned, 36,198 minority-owned and 6,421 veteran-owned (ABS data year 2023). These are firms, not outlets; for unit counts see franchise industry growth.

What share of franchise businesses are Asian-owned?

18.1% of US franchise employer firms were Asian-owned in 2023, against 10.6% of all responding employer firms (Census ABS, data year 2023, our calculation).

What share of franchise businesses are Black-owned?

2.7% of US franchise employer firms were Black or African American-owned in 2023. 5.1% of Black-owned employer firms operated as a franchise, against 4.2% of White-owned firms (Census ABS, data year 2023).

What share of franchise businesses are Hispanic-owned?

6.1% of US franchise employer firms were Hispanic-owned in 2023, against 7.0% of all responding employer firms (Census ABS, data year 2023, our calculation).

Are women-owned businesses less likely to be franchises?

Yes. 3.7% of female-owned US employer firms operated as a franchise in 2023, against 4.5% of male-owned firms, a gap that clears the 90% test. In accommodation and food services the rates were 11.9% and 22.2% (Census ABS, data year 2023).

Are businesses owned equally by men and women more likely to franchise?

Yes. 6.8% of US employer firms owned equally by men and women operated as a franchise in 2023, the highest rate of the three sex categories, and these firms were 19.7% of all franchise firms (Census ABS, data year 2023).

Are minority-owned firms franchising less than in 2019?

The minority-owned franchise share fell from 7.4% in 2019 to 6.2% in 2023 and the Asian-owned share from 9.9% to 7.9% (ABS data year 2019, ABS data year 2023). Minority-owned firms still franchised more often than nonminority-owned firms (4.2%) in 2023.

Which industry has the most franchise owners?

Accommodation and food services: 19.3% of responding US employer firms in that sector operated as a franchise in 2023, the highest reliable sector share (Census ABS, data year 2023). See franchise ideas for the range of other sectors.

Do franchise owners usually start or buy their business?

In the 2007 Census microdata, 50.0% of owners of franchise employer businesses had bought the business and 42.6% had founded it; for other owners the figures were 23.6% and 66.0% (SBO 2007 PUMS, our estimate). An owner can report more than one route. See our franchise resale research.

Why do other franchise owner statistics give different numbers?

Many circulating figures come from career sites or surveys without a stated method. Census ABS figures are shares of responding employer firms with published standard errors (ABS methodology). The choice of base also matters: minority-owned firms were 27.3% of classifiable franchise firms but 26.7% when publicly held and unclassifiable firms are included.

Press summary and suggested headlines

Franchising is a more common route into business ownership for some groups than others, according to an analysis of Census Bureau Annual Business Survey data for 2023 by Franchise Consultants and Brokers. Of US employer firms that answered the survey, 4.7% operated all or partly as a franchise. The rate was 7.9% for Asian-owned firms and 4.2% for White-owned firms. Female-owned firms franchised at 3.7%, against 4.5% for male-owned firms, and made up 19.1% of franchise firms. Minority-owned firms made up 27.3% of franchise firms against 20.6% of all firms. Veteran-owned firms franchised at the same 4.6% rate as other firms, though their rate was higher in food service. Every comparison was tested against Census's published standard errors. The Asian-owned and minority-owned franchise shares fell between 2019 and 2023. Older Census microdata from 2007 show that half of franchise owners had bought their business. Methodology

Sources and selection. Primary data are the Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey (ABS) Characteristics of Businesses bulk files for data years 2019 to 2023 (AB2300CSCB01 and earlier years), the ABS Characteristics of Business Owners file, the 2012 Survey of Business Owners franchise table and the 2007 Survey of Business Owners public use microdata (PUMS). We downloaded each file from www2.census.gov, checked its size against the server, and parsed it with the Python scripts published with this page. The Census API was not used. IFA and Oxford Economics survey figures are included as Tier 2 and labelled as the IFA’s own numbers.

Year labels. Census names each ABS by its collection year, and each collection asks about the year before (Census: the 2024 ABS covers reference year 2023). Census’s API metadata ties the AB2300 bulk tables used here to that 2024 survey (API dataset 2023/abscb), and the AB1900 tables to the 2020 ABS, reference year 2019 (ABS API notes, 2020). Every ABS year on this page is the data (reference) year: 2023 data come from the 2024 ABS, and the 2019 to 2023 change compares the 2020 and 2024 surveys. The 2023 ABS questionnaire, which asks about 2022, produced the AB2200 (data year 2022) files. SBO 2007 and SBO 2012 labels are reference years.

Definitions. Franchise share = firms answering yes to “did all or part of this business operate as a franchise?” divided by firms answering the question, employer firms only, all sectors, United States. Owner groups use Census labels and the 51% ownership rule. Shares of franchise firms use firms classifiable by owner as the base.

Statistics. Standard errors are Census’s published values. Differences between two groups or two years are called significant when they exceed 1.645 times the square root of the summed squared standard errors (90% level; Census’s own rule of thumb uses 1.6). Propensity ratio intervals use the delta method. Industry cells count as reliable only when published without a flag and when both the share and count relative standard errors are under 30%. SBO 2007 owner traits are weighted owner-level estimates with the random-group standard errors described in the PUMS users guide.

Conflicts and exclusions. Where an IFA figure and our recomputation of the same Census file differ, we show both and explain the base. Statistics pages that give franchise owner gender, age or veteran shares without a primary source were excluded, as were sales-per-firm comparisons by owner group. SBO 2012 values are shown for context but not tested against ABS values because the surveys differ.

Limitations. ABS shares describe responding firms; about 63.3% of the sample responded sufficiently. Firms are not franchise units, and franchisees are not separated from franchisors. The owner trait comparison is from 2007. Last updated 2026-10-04.
